Trademark Guidelines

The George Washington University has registered the trademarks that are shown on the Approved Logo Sheet (PDF). The university's trademarks are intended to present a positive image of the George Washington University and may not be altered in any way. GW requires all individuals, groups, departments, and organizations to receive permission before using the trademarks for merchandise. Contact ltp@gwu.edu for merchandise versions of the GW logos. To ensure prompt approval when submitting your request, please adhere to the following rules and guidelines for usage of the university's trademarks:

Student Organizations must follow the Merchandise Guidelines for Student Organizations (PDF).

Using Institutional Marks in Merchandise:

  • ALL merchandise must have the university's approved name, logo, or wordmark imprinted in at least one prominent location i.e., back, front, pocket, sleeve.
  • When using the GW Institutional Marks they must be used in their entirety and may not be altered in any way, shape, or form.
  • The symbol ® must appear at the lower right area of the logo or name.
  • Institutional marks must appear in the colors listed on the GW Approved Logo sheet.
  • When using GW's Primary Mark we require 1/4 the width of the logo in clear space surrounding the mark.
  • When using GW's Secondary Mark (Horizontal logo) we require 1/12 the width of the logo in clear space surrounding the mark.
  • GW's Primary Mark must be a minimum size of .375" wide.
  • Institutional Mark imprint PMS colors are BUFF 7503 and BLUE 302.
  • The letters "GWU" must not appear. The letters "GW" are acceptable.
  • Slang words or phrases must not be used in any design or merchandise depicting the George Washington University name.
  • Artwork and designs including negative ethnic depictions of any kind are not acceptable.
  • Preferred Font Type: Avenir (if you do not have the font Avenir we suggest Arial or Times New Roman)

Using the University Seal in Merchandise:

Using Athletics Marks in Merchandise:

  • ALL merchandise must have the university's approved name, logo, or wordmark imprinted in at least one prominent location i.e., back, front, pocket, sleeve.
  • When using the GW Athletics Marks they must be used in their entirety and may not be altered in any way, shape, or form.
  • The symbol ® must appear at the lower right area of the logo or trademark.
  • The GW Athletics Mark must appear in the colors listed on the GW Approved Logo sheet.
  • The GW Primary Athletics Mark imprint PMS colors are BUFF 7502 and BLUE 282. 
  • When using the GW Athletics Mark GW requires a minimum of 1/8 of the width of the logo in clear surrounding the mark.
  • The letters "GWU" must not appear. The letters "GW" are acceptable.
  • Preferred font type: Liberator, United Sans, or Knockout. 
  • The GW Primary Athletics Marks, #'s 25–30 as indicated on page 2 of the Approved Logo Sheet, must be used as a primary logo when advertising any of the university's athletic teams or programs. However, these logos can also be used for non-athletic events as well.
    • The Tertiary Athletics Mark with University Name, #'s 37–42 on the Approved Logo Sheet, and the George Mascot (Tertiary Athletics) Mark, #'s 43–48 on the Approved Logo Sheet, require approval from the Licensing and Trademarks Program.
  • GW Coaching Staff, please refer to the Varsity Athletics section for Graphic Identity Guidelines on Merchandise for use on team uniforms, practice gear, and equipment. 
  • Slang words or phrases must not be used in any design or merchandise depicting The George Washington University name.
  • Artwork and designs including negative ethnic depictions of any kind are not acceptable.

Using Registration Marks in Jewelry:

  • We understand that the registration mark ® can easily be mistaken for a period on select jewelry pieces. Please send your artwork to the Licensing and Trademarks Program for guidance on how to avoid a period-like mark on your merchandise.
